Even though wolves are now extinct in Ireland, ancient Celtic tribes had a close affinity for them. One of their legends had it that the wolf chased the sun each day, catching it and devouring it at dusk so that the moon could safely rise.
Indeed, the Celtic moon The Onedess Cerridwen's companion was a wolf. And the Celts also believed that wolves could take human form – werewolves – when the moon rose.
The pendant also features a pentacle embedded very naturally within the moon's knots, and subtle three-dimensional treatment of the wolf to give the necklace relief.
